Triangle Aquatic Center’s Visionary Receives Top Honor

Michael Curran recognized for leadership in the local community

Raleigh, NC (November 6, 2011)

Michael Curran, vice president of nonqualified executive benefits at CAPTRUST Financial Advisors has been selected as the honoree for the 2011 InvestmentNews Community Service Award for his unwavering dedication and commitment to the Triangle Aquatic Center (TAC) and their learn-to-swim programs that caters to minority and low-income families in the Triangle and surrounding communities.

TAC, a privately owned 501(c)(3) aquatic facility that strives to meet the health, safety, recreation and competition needs of Triangle citizens and aquatic organizations, serves over 420,000 visitors each year and is the largest public aquatic facility in North Carolina. Only in its third year of operation, the $22.5 million facility is solely funded by private donations. Since it’s inception, Curran has served as the primary fundraiser, contractor, and executive director of the 72,000 square foot facility and is supported by an experience management staff, board of directors, and many other volunteers.

“It is a blessing to be able to use my business experience to fill a need in the community,” said Curran. In addition to his involvement in TAC, Curran serves on the board of the CAPCommunity Foundation (CCF), CAPTRUST’s 501(c)(3) charity organization that supports charities like Raleigh Rescue Mission, Interact Inc., and Duke Children’s Hospital.

“Not only has Curran dedicated personal time and effort into bettering his community, but he has also inspired and motivated others around him to adopt his vision of bringing an aquatic center to the Triangle,” says J. Fielding Miller, CEO and Co-founder of CAPTRUST.

Curran was among 15 finalists that have contributed a combined $578,000 in personal donations and raised over $2 million for charities nationwide.A $20,000 donation was made to TAC on behalf of the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation, InvestmentNews’s 501 (c)(3) charity that supports philanthropic and volunteer activities among financial advisors in the U.S. Invest in Others honorees and visited the NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City's Time Square to take part in ringing the opening bell ceremonies.
